A city doesn’t have to be a sprawling metropolis to be rich in history. Such is the case for Sioux City, Iowa, This city, the fourth largest in the Hawkeye State, is one of the major historical centers for the Great Plains region of the country and is still a relevant cultural epicenter to this day.
As the name suggests, Sioux City lies in the heart of an area that once belonged to the Great Sioux Nation of American Indians. As the new American nation expanded after the Revolutionary War, the famous explorers Merriweather Lewis and William Clark visited the area. In fact, the spot where Sioux City now stands is the final resting place for Charles Floyd, the only member of Lewis and Clark’s expedition to pass away during the journey.
The official founding of Sioux City itself came in the 1800s. As more and more Americans moved to the Hawkeye State, Sioux City itself continued to grow. During the late 1800s and 1900s, the establishment of railways fostered a population boom. Today, Sioux City continues to draw in more residents and visitors.
