Where is the best place in Iowa to celebrate Independence Day? Many people say it’s the 4th of July Celebration in Urbandale. This huge gathering in Lion’s Park is the biggest holiday celebration of the summer in the Des Moines area. The highlight is a two-mile-long parade, where spectators stake their viewing spots hours in advance. Celebrate your American spirit this summer!
This annual event in Indianola is not your typical summer festival! Over 100 hot air balloons from across the country gather at the Balloon Field in late July/early August to fill the sky with their patchwork colors. This is more than an aerial spectacle; this is a highly competitive event where skilled pilots show off their midair feats. You can even book on a ride on a hot air balloon! Make sure you stay for the Nite Glow after the sun goes down … and the balloons light the sky!
The state’s largest annual event happens in early August in Des Moines and proudly bears the prestige of being one of the country’s oldest agricultural expositions. In addition to seeing the best livestock and produce that Iowa’s hard-working farmers have to show, you can also enjoy live music, vendors, shows at the Elwell Family Park, carnival games, kiddie rides, and iconic fair food!
